Taragbusao and the other demon beasts

Taragbusao

Taragbusao was a deity or rather a demon worshiped in some parts of Visayas. Orally passed down stories depict him as an attractive man with golden teeth, long dark hair kept in a red "pudong" adorned with gold. His skin brown and muscular body decorated with numerous tattoos. In stories he was amorous, lustful and roaring. He would transform himself into a half-man half-horse (some versions vary that the lower part is of a water buffalo) the upper body would retain his strong attractive male guise and the lower part would be a winged horse, he stands on four hoofed legs.
Stories say  that he required sacrifices, the hearts of young men and the body of women. The women would be adorned in flowers and dance in his honor, and the hearts of the enemy are sacrificed to him. In the stories is veneration ended when a young sultan fell in love with a girl from the tribe that would be one of the dancers for the deity.  The young Sultan armed with "true love" and  aided by the ancestral spirits were able to trick Taragbusao so he would fall and sleep in the sea. Some versions however vary, that a young and proud sultan came to the lands of the god and took a girl to be her bride, with the help of new gods they defeated Taragbusao and enslaved his worshipers.

Tarabusaw

Tarabusaw was one of the four great beast that terrorized early Mindanao according to oral tradition, he declared himself a god but was vanquished by a valiant prince Gino Sulayman also called Datu Sulayman with the blessing of his brother who was a king Raja Sulayman.

Long ago Mindanao was covered with water and there were no lowlands, but there were mountains instead. This was home of villages and many settlements and tribes. For many years the people prospered, living in peace and contentment appeared in the land four horrible monsters which, declared themselves as gods and demanded human sacrifice, in a short time, had devoured every human being they could find. Kurita, a terrible creature with many limbs, she declared herself a goddess and lived partly on land and partly in the sea, but its favorite haunt was the mountain where the rattan grew; and here it brought utter destruction on every living thing. The second monster, Tarabusaw, an ugly creature in the form of a muscular man body covered with tattoos, lived on Mt. Matutun, and far and wide from that place he devoured the people, laying waste the land. The third, an enormous bird called Pah, was so large that when on the wing it covered the sun and brought darkness to the earth. Its egg was as large as a house. Mt. Bita was its haunt. And the fourth monster was Gurayan with seven heads and the power to see in all directions at the same time. Mt. Gurayn was its home and like the others it wrought havoc in its region. The king Raja Indrapatra asked his brother Datu Sulayman to slay the beasts, and so he did. Ending their reign of terror.
